    Diversity & Inclusion

    Our Commitment to Diversity:

Brown Medicine is committed to serving a culturally rich community of all backgrounds, ages, races, sex, gender identities, abilities and sexual orientations. As a medical provider, we believe the diversity of our workforce is a major contributor to providing high-quality healthcare. Furthermore, we trust that all people deserve health care that supports their individual needs without discrimination or judgment.

Brown Medicine is proud to provide safe, affirming and inclusive care to LGBTQIA patients.

    We commit to:

    • Train staff to care for trans* and LGB patients
    • Protect patients and our staff from discrimination based on gender identity or expression
    • Provide gender-neutral bathrooms where possible
    • Use inclusive forms and procedures

    Initiatives:

Bias Reduction in Internal Medicine (BRIM)

    • We seek to mitigate medical bias within the healthcare industry. As a leading healthcare provider, Brown Medicine follows The BRIM Initiative, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which aligns our judgments and behaviors with our explicit commitments to be fair and objective.

GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD)

    • Brown Medicine is a proud sponsor of GLAD and its commitment to providing strategic litigation, public policy advocacy, and education to the LGBTQIA+ community in the workplace and everyday life.

    Policies:

    • Affirmative Action
    • Anti-Discrimination and Harassment
    • Code of Conduct
    • Disruptive Behavior
    • Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Statement
    • Gender Variance Employment
    • Sexual Harassment
    • Workplace Gender Identity and Transition Guide
    • Ethnic and Socioeconomic Diversity in Rhode Island:

Rhode Island has a long history of immigration, and this contributes to the state’s cultural history. With just over 1 million people living in Rhode Island, the state has many ethnic enclaves originating from all over the world. As of 2017, 14 percent of the population was born outside the United States. The largest of these groups consists of people with Dominican, Guatemalan and Portuguese heritage. Rhode Island also has a sizable Haitian population.

    Providence:

As a “minority-majority” city, Providence boasts a diverse population with 38 percent of the community being Hispanic/Latino, 16 percent Black/African-American, 6.4 percent Asian and 1.4 percent Native American/Alaskan Native.

Providence is also an active refugee resettlement site, serving as a new home to immigrants from around the globe.

    Message from Brown Medicine President/Physician-In-Chief

As physicians, advance practice professionals, nurses, technicians and support staff, we at Brown Medicine care for patients from all backgrounds, with different beliefs and many different ailments. In order to promote our patients’ health and treat their illnesses, we must first learn about, understand and accept the circumstances in which they live. We are therefore privy to many deeply personal aspects of our patients’ lives, an extraordinary privilege and a solemn responsibility.

We celebrate the diversity of our patient population and are committed to the highest standards of diversity and inclusion in our organization. Everyone connected with our organization, whether patients, employees or those who do business with us, has the right to be treated with the utmost respect and consideration regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political beliefs. It is only by closely holding these principles that we will be able to effectively and compassionately treat the patients who trust us with their lives.

    Dr. Louis B. Rice
    President/Physician-In-Chief
    Brown Medicine
